Conversion Rate Optisation, segmented customer strategy

Pop-ups can be intrusive when implemented ad-hoc. Tactically executed, however, they form an essential part of effective marketing.

Coles Express is one of the leading fuel and convenience retailers with over 700 stores located throughout Australia, offering an array of products, including Shell fuel, food, drinks, and groceries.

Our mission was to improve user engagement and local visibility by optimising Coles Express Google My Business (GMB) listings.

To achieve this goal, we developed a comprehensive strategy that focused on improving search performance on both Google SERPs and Maps, ensuring maximum exposure for relevant user searches.

Target Australia partnered with Resolution Digital to improve newsletter sign-ups, increase awareness of key seasonal campaigns, and drive greater online revenue. Through a sophisticated CRO and personalisation program, we designed, tested and optimised a series of behavioural pop-ups that delivered more than 60 million impressions while maintaining a positive customer experience.

What we did

  • Developed and optimised a behavioural pop-up strategy to increase newsletter subscriptions and seasonal campaign engagement

  • Designed and tested seven pop-up experiences across key retail moments including Black Friday, Christmas, Father’s Day and Click Frenzy

  • Implemented advanced customer segmentation and targeting based on user behaviour and audience type

  • Built complex trigger logic and mutually exclusive experimentation to protect the customer experience

  • Increased awareness of key campaigns beyond the homepage through personalised messaging and landing page journeys

  • Delivered more than 60 million impressions and a 1,200% uplift in newsletter performance, contributing to increased revenue over a nine-month period

The results

  • 450K+ Virtual Pink Seats sold (377K via website)

  • $9 million raised across all channels

  • Website performance exceeded targets by 29%

  • eCommerce funnel outperformed benchmarks 2x
